Spring 2012 Bulletin

The Order of the Founders and Patriots in the District of Columbia held its 85th Anniversary Dinner, on November 18, 2011 at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. Governor Timothy C. Finton recognized four new Associates by presenting them rosettes of the Order. A full contingent of Associates and Guests filled the Gold Room to capacity to hear renowned guest speaker, David J. Silverman, Ph.D., Professor of History, The George Washington University, who teaches Early American and American Indian history. The nationally-recognized Professor Silverman spoke on "New Reflections on the Causes and Conduct of King Philip's War." In this fascinating hour-long presentation, Professor Silverman advanced his provocative theory that the mysterious killing of John Sassamon was the specific cause of the War, not the factor of "inevitability" of armed conflict between Native Americans and colonial settlers as often touted by historians of the colonial era. A lively question and answer period ensued.

The Associates, guests, and prospective members of the District of Columbia Society will be gathering on Saturday, March 10, 2012 for the 87th Annual Meeting and Luncheon at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The guest speaker will be Mr. John Marshall, Director of Guest Relations, Historic Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, speaking on "The Legacy of George Washington."

Spring 2011 Bulletin

On November 19, 2010, the District of Columbia Society held its annual Anniversary Dinner at the Cosmos Club in Washington. Deputy Governor Timothy C. Finton presided over the evening's festivities welcoming David Bourne from the Ohio Society as a new Dual Associate in the District of Columbia Society. He also welcomed Ross Gamble Perry as a prospect who since then has been accepted as an Associate.

Since the meeting of the General Society's Executive Council was being held the next day, numerous officers of the General Society attended, including Governor General Dr. Tommy Leland.

The highlight of the evening was a talk given by Mr. Jack Warren, Executive Director, Anderson House, The Society of the Cincinnati, on General George Washington. Due to Mr. Warren's extensive work editing the papers of Washington, he was able to speak extemporaneously on facts that we probably never knew about Washington. His talk made for a lively evening and the Associates were grateful that Mr. Warren had "crossed the "Avenue" from Anderson House to the Cosmos Club.

The Associates of the District of Columbia Society are looking forward to their annual Spring Luncheon on Saturday, March 5 in Washington with the installation of officers. In the coming year, the District of Columbia Society plans to build on its relationship with the Daughters of Founders and Patriots, District of Columbia Chapter.

The guest of honor was Thomas E. Crocker, Esq., author of the recently released book entitled “Braddock’s March.” Mr. Crocker gave an outstanding talk on how the defeat of General Braddock in the French and Indian War set the stage for the American victory in the Revolutionary War. The fact that the ill-fated march began in the Washington, DC area gave a feeling of immediacy to the talk by this consummate storyteller. The District of Columbia Society will be holding its annual spring luncheon on March 20, 2010 at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
