Spring 2011 Bulletin

On November 19, 2010, the District of Columbia Society held its annual Anniversary Dinner at the Cosmos Club in Washington. Deputy Governor Timothy C. Finton presided over the evening's festivities welcoming David Bourne from the Ohio Society as a new Dual Associate in the District of Columbia Society. He also welcomed Ross Gamble Perry as a prospect who since then has been accepted as an Associate.

Since the meeting of the General Society's Executive Council was being held the next day, numerous officers of the General Society attended, including Governor General Dr. Tommy Leland.

The highlight of the evening was a talk given by Mr. Jack Warren, Executive Director, Anderson House, The Society of the Cincinnati, on General George Washington. Due to Mr. Warren's extensive work editing the papers of Washington, he was able to speak extemporaneously on facts that we probably never knew about Washington. His talk made for a lively evening and the Associates were grateful that Mr. Warren had "crossed the "Avenue" from Anderson House to the Cosmos Club.

The Associates of the District of Columbia Society are looking forward to their annual Spring Luncheon on Saturday, March 5 in Washington with the installation of officers. In the coming year, the District of Columbia Society plans to build on its relationship with the Daughters of Founders and Patriots, District of Columbia Chapter.

In addition, there are two active prospects preparing their application forms. Preparations are progressing for the Society's Annual Dinner to be held in November at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC.

As in past years, this coincided with a meeting of the Order’s Executive Committee. Joining the District of Columbia Associates were Governor General John Bourne (OH) and Mrs. Bourne and Secretary General Dr. Thomas Leland (SC). Governor General Bourne swore in two of the Society’s four new members for 2009.
District of Columbia Society Governor Donald N. Lamson, Esq. recognized Associates attending who currently are serving as heads of other hereditary societies, including Nicholas Donnell Ward, Esq., National Society of Americans of Royal Descent; J. Michael Phelps, Esq., President General, Presidential Families of America; The Rev. Barry C. Howard, Order of Descendants of Colonial Cavaliers; and Timothy C. The guest of honor was Thomas E. Crocker, Esq., author of the recently released book entitled “Braddock’s March.” Mr. Crocker gave an outstanding talk on how the defeat of General Braddock in the French and Indian War set the stage for the American victory in the Revolutionary War. The fact that the ill-fated march began in the Washington, DC area gave a feeling of immediacy to the talk by this consummate storyteller. The District of Columbia Society will be holding its annual spring luncheon on March 20, 2010 at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
